Andrew Hutchinson a senior male nurse who was working as a staff nurse at a hospital in Oxfordshire pleaded guilty to a series of sex offences levelled against him. He was charged for raping multiple unconscious female patients at the hospital where he worked as a nurse.
Hutchinson, 29, of Garford, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire was a senior nurse at the Emergency Departments of Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital when he was arrested in November 2013 on suspicion of voyeurism offences at a local leisure centre. His arrest led to the detection of further offences - including raping two unconscious female patients - through images found on devices including a mobile phone, computer equipment, memory stick and camera.
The victims of the sex attacks had been unaware of the crimes committed against them. Most of the victims of the voyeurism offences had been unaware they were being recorded or filmed at the White Horse Leisure Centre, Abingdon. Police undertook extensive investigations to identify all the victims of offences in all images. All identifiable victims have now been contacted by Thames Valley Police and have been offered appropriate support.
Hutchinson admitted all 27 counts against him at at Oxford Crown Court. I am pleased that Hutchinson has pleaded guilty to his offences and spared his victims having to endure a trial to receive justice. This has been a complicated and unusual case as the victims of his sex offences were not aware that offences took place because they were not conscious.
Thames Valley Police sent specially trained officers to personally speak to all the victims, who showed great courage when informed with such distressing news. I have no doubt that Hutchinson would have continued to offend had he not been arrested.
